For parents and students exploring international education, the IB Diploma Programme (DP) can look quite different from other senior secondary programmes.
Alongside academic subjects, students complete a core that gives them opportunities to question ideas, carry out independent research, and learn through experiences beyond the classroom.
Understanding the Core Components of the IB Diploma Programme makes it easier to see how these parts fit together and what students gain from them.
The IB Diploma is designed for students aged 16-19. Students study subjects across different disciplines while also completing three core components: Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the Extended Essay (EE), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS).
The six subject groups provide the academic foundation, while the core brings research, reflection, and experiences beyond individual subjects into the programme.
What Are the Three Core Components of the IB DP?
The three core components are:
The core gives students opportunities to take what they learn in their subjects and look at it from different angles. It also gives them time to pursue an area of interest, reflect on their experiences, and engage with the wider community.
TOK is unlike almost any subject students have encountered before. It asks students to examine how we know what we know.
It encourages students to question assumptions, consider different perspectives, and explore why people may reach different conclusions about the same issue.
How TOK Develops Critical Thinking
Students learn to question how knowledge is built, identify assumptions, consider other viewpoints, and explain the reasoning behind their own conclusions.
Why It Matters Beyond School
These discussions can help students become more thoughtful when dealing with complicated questions, whether they encounter them at university, at work, or in everyday life.
The Extended Essay is an independent research project based on a question chosen by the student. It involves sustained investigation and academic writing, giving students experience with a longer piece of research.
Skills the Extended Essay Builds
Skill | What Students Actually Do |
Research | Find, evaluate, and select credible sources |
Academic Writing | Structure an argument clearly |
Time Management | Manage a long-term project alongside other commitments |
Analysis | Develop and defend a reasoned position |
Academic Integrity | Cite correctly, avoid plagiarism, use sources responsibly |
Why It Matters
Students can explore a subject that genuinely interests them, giving them an opportunity to work independently and take ownership of a substantial piece of academic work.
CAS encourages students to take part in experiences across Creativity, Activity, and Service. The emphasis is on getting involved, trying new things, working with others, and reflecting on what they learn from those experiences.
The three core components connect with those six subjects.
TOK encourages students to think across disciplines. The Extended Essay develops the research and writing skills that every subject demands. CAS builds the self-management, leadership, and reflection that make academic success meaningful.
Together, they shape the IB Learner Profile, developing students who are not just knowledgeable, but curious, principled, caring, and reflective.
The core gives students experience with independent research, academic writing, critical thinking, and managing longer-term work.
Communication, collaboration, adaptability, research, and independent thinking can be useful across a wide range of careers.
The IB core gives students opportunities to balance academic work with personal interests, community involvement, and reflection.
Curiosity, independent thinking, reflection, and a willingness to keep learning can remain valuable well beyond school.
At The Shri Ram Academy, the IBDP core components are taught and supported with the same rigour as any subject. We believe they are where some of the most important learning happens. If you would like to understand how we approach TOK, the Extended Essay, and CAS, we are glad to walk you through it.
The IBDP consists of six subject groups along with central DP core components.
Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the Extended Essay (EE), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS).
It’s a core mandatory component of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme that asks students to reflect on the nature of knowledge and how we know what we claim to know.
Yes. Every IB Diploma candidate must complete an Extended Essay to earn their full diploma.
CAS promotes physical and emotional well-being, leadership, and community responsibility by encouraging students to learn through hands-on creative, physical, and service-oriented projects.
